The Infection Fighter (par excellence)
One of our most popular tinctures, EchinaSeal™ has been used with a great deal of success by those suffering from infection, especially bacterial infections (streptococcus and others), but also viral infections. EchinaSeal™ contains extremely powerful antibacterial herbs. It is also taken by those who feel themselves coming down with a cold or flu and need something right away to counter these strong viruses. EchinaSeal™ works great as well for lung infections (see also Usnea Combo) and gingivitis. In addition, EchinaSeal™ can be used externally as a wash for infected cuts, wounds, and scrapes (note that it stings). In this case it should be diluted with water and applied with cotton swabs.
The two foremost anti-microbial components of this formula are the Echinacea (our EchinAce™ is a robust blend of two species of this herb) and the Golden Seal. In the 19th and early 20th centuries Echinacea was found strong enough to be effective against typhus, diphtheria, and scarlet fever. These antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-tumour properties have been verified by modern science, as has Echinacea’s ability to elevate white blood cell counts.
As for Golden Seal, not only is it our best tonifier of mucous membranes, but it has a strong antimicrobial aspect too. In fact, Dr. Bill Mitchell names it his top medicine for antibacterial and antiseptic purposes.
The Wild Indigo is also a very good antimicrobial. As is the Propolis. Wild Indigo serves to improve the activity of the Echinacea. As for the Cayenne, it enhances the action of all the other herbs in this formula. Besides being antimicrobial, Propolis demonstrates anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and immuno-stimulatory action. The Myrrh in EchinaSeal™ increases white cell production and is specifically indicated for mononucleosis.
If there is a chronic tendency to infection and one needs to strengthen the immune system, the best choice of treatment in such a case is Astragalus Combo.
CONTRA-INDICATIONS AND CAUTIONS:
Do not take when pregnant. EchinaSeal™ should not be used as prophylactic (preventative) because its Golden Seal component, when used over a period of weeks (i.e. four or more), will interfere with the intestinal flora and also deplete the body of B vitamins. The best approach for long term prevention, particularly during flu and cold season, is to take 30 drops of the EchinAce™ daily. Use EchinaSeal™, however, at the onset of flu or cold symptoms.

A NOTE ON TINCTURES
Tinctures are more readily absorbed by the body and have a high degree of bio-availability. As well, they have a long shelf life.
Sometimes people ask us why tinctures are alcohol-based. There are very good reasons. Alcohol is critically important in the extraction of an herb's medicinal ingredients. It also helps to stabilize and preserve them. Alcohol is the ideal carrier substance, conveying the therapeutic goodness of the herb to the body. In itself, too, science has proven that alcohol enhances the immune system and its defences.
As for the amount of alcohol taken in an average dose of tincture, you'll be surprised to learn that it's about the same as what you'd find in an overly ripe banana!
Tinctures remain the most practical way to take advantage of the amazing, health-giving power of herbs.
