This is our best spring/autumn tonic for nutritive and cleansing purposes. Tonics have been defined as agents “which permanently exalt the energies of the body at large, without vitally affecting any one organ in particular… in short, tonics tone the whole system.” (H.W. Felter, The Eclectic Materia Medica, Pharmacology, and Therapeutics, Eclectic Medical Publications, Portland, OR; 1985).
Our Clear River Cleanse® is invaluable for use on a once yearly basis (ideally twice yearly), involving a three to six week period for toning and detoxifying the whole system. It is especially beneficial if employed in conjunction with a detox diet as well as other forms of detoxification such as hydrotherapy or colonic therapy. It can also be used for treating skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
This formula is composed primarily of nutritive tonics and alteratives. Alteratives are the class of herbal medicines valued for their ability to alter the state or function of a gland or tissue, improving their ability to detoxify and function optimally.
Sometimes the primary organs of elimination - the kidneys, liver, and large bowel – do not function optimally either from overwork due to an excess load of toxins or from under-activity. It is postulated that in such situations secondary organs of elimination like the lungs and skin assume an increased toxin load. This can result in general ill health, poor energy, and skin eruptions such as eczema, acne, and psoriasis, as well as digestive and endocrine disorders. This state of affairs can also contribute to more serious conditions like auto-immune disease and cancer.

A NOTE ON TINCTURES
Tinctures are more readily absorbed by the body and have a high degree of bio-availability. As well, they have a long shelf life.
Sometimes people ask us why tinctures are alcohol-based. There are very good reasons. Alcohol is critically important in the extraction of an herb's medicinal ingredients. It also helps to stabilize and preserve them. Alcohol is the ideal carrier substance, conveying the therapeutic goodness of the herb to the body. In itself, too, science has proven that alcohol enhances the immune system and its defences.
As for the amount of alcohol taken in an average dose of tincture, you'll be surprised to learn that it's about the same as what you'd find in an overly ripe banana!
Tinctures remain the most practical way to take advantage of the amazing, health-giving power of herbs.
