HISTORY
Wild yam root (Dioscorea Villosa) of the Dioscoreaceae family, has a tuberous root with a long history of medicinal and food use. Species of wild yam are commonly found in Mexico, India, China, Peru and Africa. Diosgenin, a steroid-like substance found in wild yam, was used in the development of modern contraceptives.
