The active ingredients of comfrey are allantoin, rosemarinic acid, and mucilage. Allantoin is credited with encouraging bone, cartilage, and muscle cells to grow giving relief to arthritic joints, bruises, sprains, and other traumatic injuries. Use of capsicum in creams has also been found to help reduce the itching of dialysis patients, the pain from shingles (Herpes zoster), and cluster headaches. Further research has indicated that capsaicin cream reduces pain associated with arthritis.

HISTORY

Comfrey has been cultivated since about 400 BC as a healing herb. The word comfrey, derived from the Latin word for "grow together", reflects the early uses of this plant. Greeks and Romans used comfrey to stop heavy bleeding, treat bronchial problems, and heal wounds and broken bones. Poultices were made for external wounds and tea was consumed for internal ailments. The Medicinal use of Capsicum has a long history, dating back to the Mayas who used them to treat asthma, coughs, and sore throats. The Aztecs used chile pungency to relieve toothaches.
