HISTORY
Aloe is a perennial succulent, native to East and South Africa, that grows wild in the tropics and is now cultivated extensively world wide. The aloe vera plant grows in a rosette from the base, the leaves, which protrude from the base are long and spear-like with thorny ridges. Aloe vera gel has been widely used in treatment of wounds since before 500BC. The Greek physician Dioscorides claimed that aloe vera gel could be used to heal skin infections, chapping and hemorrhoids. Aloe vera has been widely used in India as a cathartic, stomachic and anthelminthic; in China as a common dermatological remedy; and in Mexico to treat skin irritations. It is also a common folk remedy in most of the Americas and the West Indies.
