Echinacea Purpurea & Angustifolia
Echinacea has been shown to have immunological activity. While the results from clinical trials are sometimes conflicting, there is a growing body of information to show that it may be useful in treating colds, flus and infections of the upper respiratory tract and lower urinary tract when administered internally. This herb also has anti-inflammatory activity, used in managing skin abrasion and ulceration when administered externally.

HISTORY
There are nine Echinacea species indigenous to the North American mid-west from Saskatchewan to Texas, but only three species of this perennial are collected or cultivated as medicinal herbs. Echinacea angustifolia is the smallest of these plants, growing to only 0.5 meters or 18 inches. Although commercial cultivation of Echinacea angustifolia has been initiated, much of the medicinal supply is still wild-harvested. Echinacea pupurea, the most common purple cone flower, can grow from 0.5 to 1.5 meters or 3 to 5 feet in height. The entire medicinal supply of this species is cultivated. The vast majority of both pharmacological and clinical studies have been conducted with E. purpurea.
