This is truly an amazing essential oil – miraculous you could say – one of nature’s best-kept secrets. But word is spreading. People are learning about this incredible herb – powerful enough to sterilize sewage water, but gentle enough not to damage human tissue. It’s become one of our best-selling products, highly effective for a wide range of ailments and conditions.
As early as 1910 a researcher named W.H. Martindale noted that “the essential oil of Oregano is the most powerful plant-derived antiseptic known.”
These early findings have been amply confirmed by contemporary research. In 1977 a French doctor named Belaiche unveiled his “Oregano Index”. This Index uses Oregano Oil as the base reference against which to compare the bactericidal action of other substances. This is because, out of all the natural essential oils, Oregano is the closest to being an ideal antibacterial agent. He explains that, “Among the most active oils Oregano is the `best of the best’… The essential Oil of Oregano has always provided me with amazing results in treating infectious diseases.”
Dr. Jean Valnet, a leading French authority on the use of essential oils, reports that in at least one laboratory study, essential oils “proved to be many times more effective at killing pathogenic microorganisms than antibiotics.”
A key active ingredient of Oregano Oil is carvacrol, which has been found effective against upper respiratory infections (including colds and sinus infections). As well, researchers have discovered that it potently inhibits platelet aggregation, a known risk factor in thrombus (blood clot) formation, a leading cause of strokes and heart attacks. As for cancer, in one study, carvacrol was able to suppress melanoma by 50% in vitro.
Other studies have confirmed Oregano Oil to be more than just anti-bacterial. It actually has powerful anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-parasitic properties.
Because parasites and viruses, like yeasts, cannot be treated with antibiotics, Oil of Oregano’s ability to destroy these agents of disease has come to be seen in a new and significant light.
In a study published in 1996 in Medical Sciences Research, it was shown that this wonderfully potent herb killed RNA and DNA viruses. Among these are the types that cause cold sores, genital herpes, and shingles. This makes it an increasingly popular remedy against the ravages of colds and the flu.

In addition, it can be employed as a digestive aid. Also, it has outperformed anti-inflammatory drugs in reversing pain and inflammation, and is nearly as powerful as morphine as a pain-killer. Not only that, but it has been shown to actually strengthen the immune system.
As if all this were not enough, because it’s an anti-oxidant, it checks the formation of cholesterol, which research implicates in the onset of atherosclerosis, a.k.a. hardening of the arteries.
And to cap all these benefits - which are likely to make Oil of Oregano a more and more widely accepted weapon in the fight against disease - it can be used either internally or topically, depending on the indication.
CONTRA-INDICATIONS AND CAUTIONS
Do not use during pregnancy; not for use with children; may irritate sensitive skin. Avoid in cases of liver or kidney disease. Do not use in high doses. If irritation occurs, discontinue use. Keep out of the eyes. In large doses essential oils are CNS depressants (i.e. they are toxic to the nervous system). Do not use Oregano oil if you are taking blood thinners in case of a potential interaction.
